Foam Extinguishers
(Also known as AFFF – aqueous film forming foam or foam spray)
Foam extinguishers are suitable for use on fires involving wood, paper, textiles, plastics etc. and also suitable for use on fires involving burning liquids such as paints, oils, petrol etc. They are not suitable for use on cooking oil fires (see wet chemical extinguishers.)
As foam extinguishers are water-based they are not classified for use on live electrical equipment. However, most modern foam extinguishers are spray type discharge and will therefore be safer to the user than water extinguishers in the event of inadvertent discharge onto live electrical equipment. All foam extinguishers available from The Fire Extinguisher Man have passed British Standard conductivity tests up to 35,000 volts.
Foam spray extinguishers put out fires by cooling (they are water based extinguishers) and also by smothering, the foam helping to exclude oxygen.
